So I was with a client the other week and we were looking at some improvements they wanted to make to their property…………..
Fancy this and fancy that………..
Great ideas on how to make things look awesome………
Then we looked at their current fuseboard/DB…………
Oh dear, I’ve not seen a mess like that since I last drove through Bristol town centre on the morning after a Friday or Sat night of drunken debauchery by many
So I had the conversation…………
When did you last have your electrics inspected and tested………..
“Hhhhmmmmm I’m not too sure” was the too commonly heard reply
I advised the client that firstly if we were going to work on the circuits we would need to take responsibility for the parts of the installation we work on and as a result there may need to be some additional works to make things safe
Also advised the client that he has a responsibility to himself, his staff and the public to ensure they are safe from the electrical installation on the premises………….
That regular electrical inspections are the best, pretty much only way to demonstrate compliance with the Electricity At Work Regulations 1989
I won’t tell you the rest but it’s safe to say we wont be working with this particular client
It really does baffle me though, how many have this attitude when it comes to electrical safety………….
Whether it be a business or your own home…………why do so many not take it seriously
Gas can kill you………..and you at least can smell it when there is an issue
Electricity, you can’t see it or smell it when it is going wrong, yet when it bites…………..it is often too late.
People spend thousands without thinking to make things look ‘nice’………….
Canteen/breakout areas or reception refurb / refresh, new kitchen or bathroom at home, the garden etc…………new boiler or central heating system, a lets face it none of us can do with out water or heating……………
Electricity however…………………………..ah it’s working so it must be ok
Upgrade my fuseboard / DB……………add in RCD/RCBO protection to make things far safer………………. ‘No thank’s its ok as it is’
Rewire the property or section thereof…………….can’t afford that right now…………whilst at the same time buying a new sofa
Technology………….the minute the latest iPhone or smart TV is out we all rush to upgrade because the old one no longer does the job
Fuse boards / DB’s now have far greater make up and safety features than years ago………….yet we would rather upgrade our iPhone than our electrical safety
We need to shift peoples understanding of the why…………….
Why is it important to get your electrical systems regularly inspected and in some cases upgraded
Electricity is dangerous and there are many private and commercial properties in the UK that have poor electrical installations…………..is yours one?
